Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease refers to a breakdown of the soft discs between the vertebrae, a part of the normal wear and tear process of aging on the spine. This condition can also occur in younger individuals who have experienced a back injury.

A result of long-term wear and tear, a herniated disc occurs when an intervertebral disc that separates the bones of the spinal column ruptures, causing pain, numbness, or weakness.

Sciatica

The term sciatica is used to describe the symptoms of pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling that radiates along the sciatic nerve from the buttock through the back of the thigh and down the leg to the ankle and foot. This condition occurs when one of the nerve roots which contributes to the sciatic nerve is compressed, which can be caused by a variety of other spinal conditions.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spaces surrounding the spinal cord and nerve roots, compressing the nerves in the involved vertebrae. A variety of symptoms including pain, tingling, numbness, muscle cramping or weakness may then develop.

Also known as a "pinched nerve", the condition occurs when a nerve in the neck is irritated as it branches away from the spinal cord. It most often occurs as a result of changes in the cervical spine with age-related issues, as well as from an injury that causes a herniated or bulging disc.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a term used to describe a disorder in which a sideways curve of the spine is present. Scoliosis can occur as a single arc to either the left or right side or arc twice giving the spine an "S" shape. This curvature can be both disfiguring and painful and can result in further damage to the spine, heart, and lungs.

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a condition that occurs when one vertebra in the spinal column slides over the one below it. When the vertebra moves out of position, the spinal cord or nerve roots may be pinched causing symptoms of pain and other neurological dysfunction. Spondylolisthesis can also lead to deformities of the spine such as lordosis or kyphosis.

Kyphosis

The term "kyphosis" refers to an abnormal curving of the spine typically in the thoracic region resulting in a rounding of the back that produces a slouching or hunchback posture. While mild kyphosis may cause few problems, pronounced cases can result in more debilitating symptoms and disfigurement, such as compression of the spinal cord, and cardiac and pulmonary problems.

Dr. Jason M. Cuéllar, M.D., is unique. His interest in truly understanding the spinal conditions of his patients was borne out of his own personal experience with a spinal injury. Though he has provided numerous surgical and non-operative treatments for his patients, his quest to understand the pathophysiology of pain caused by these conditions led him to become one of the best in his field. Dr. Cuéllar specializes in treating spinal disorders and serves patients in Palm Beach County, but he began his journey by investigating the source of his own back pain. This personal experience led Dr. Cuéllar to take a holistic approach to treating spinal conditions as an M.D., but during his studies, it also led Dr. Cuéllar to work in a pain research laboratory, and become a medical scholar’s research fellow. Dr. Cuéllar received his Ph.D. at U.C. Davis before attending Stanford University Medical School. Dr. Cuéllar is associated with Jupiter Medical Center, JFK North Hospital in West Palm Beach, and Aventura Hospital in Miami. He also performs surgery at the SurgCenter of Palm Beach Gardens, Miami Surgical Center, and Lake Worth Surgical Center in Florida.
